OUR STORY

Back to School - Outdoor games!

School isn't all about working hard. It's also important to play hard!

Friday, the students got the chance to play different games and work on teamwork, cooperation and getting to know eachother!

We all had a great time!

One of the students decided it was so hot that I needed to be cooled down. He poured his water down my back...but I got my revenge during limbo! He didn't know who he was messing with :)

Great afternoon with a great group of kids!

SCOOT!

I found this great game on the Internet this summer! I decided to create my own game cards so that we could play in class!

What a hoot! The kids laughed the entire time...hearing students sing, seeing others stand up and dance or even pretend to cry...they LOVED this game! Can't wait to play again!

I added a few more pictures of them creating their OWN Scoot cards for back to school grammar review!!

Facebook 'Food for Thought' Notebooks

The students have now created their Facebook notebooks. Every Wednesday, the students write in the notebook to update their 'status'.

They choose a 'What Would You...' question from a list and answer it. Then, they share with a friend who comments and returns the notebook.

Alternative Education

During our theme 'School of the Future', students have been learning about alternative education programs, such as Waldorf, Arrowsmith, an all boys school and Montessori schools.

Each group had specific videos to watch during which they had to take notes. Afterwards, they were put into sub groups to share their new found information!

The students had a blast learning about different ways of learning and teaching!

Guyon Farm - Farm Animals and Butterflies!

This week we visited Guyon Farm! The students were lucky enough to feed different animals, such as goats, sheep, cows, rabbits and even an alpaca!

They also visited a butterfly sanctuary. It was like being in a Disney movie when the princesse sings and the forest comes alive around her. We were able to take butterflies in our hands. Sometimes, they even landed on us on their own! It was wonderful!

Schools of the Future

After studying school related vocabulary, watching videos and looking at alternative education programs, students looked into the future and created what they think schools could look like in the future!

Invitations were sent out to families and students in the school to come admire what the grade 6 groups came up with.

Take a look at what they created!

Movie Time

Movie time for the students! Hotel Transilvania 2 was a hit! Especially for myself and one of my partners who laughed the entire time!

Can you believe we were four teachers and 104 students and there was not a single problem! I'd take these guys to the movies anytime! Everyone returned to the school in one piece...some looking a little like a popcorn kernels :)

 Halloween Creepy Cooking

A fun little activity for students to practice their cooking talents! Many fantastic desserts, snacks and punches were served during this Halloween activity! Thank you parents for your hard work too!

November 11th, a day to remember those who faught and lost their lives or quality of life, so that we could be free. Since the beginning of November, the class has been studying the First World War and will be creating a newspaper as if they were authors during those four years, from 1914 to 1918. Students are also preparing a song for the remembrance day ceremony we will be hosting at our school on November 11th. Here is a preview of one of their practices!

SHOW TIME. NOVEMBER 11TH

Their hard work paid off! The assembly was a great success! The students sang beautifully and read the Flanders FIeld poem with pride!

A student in grade one shared: 'I cried because it is sad'.

After working long and hard on learning about the War and hosting a Remembrance Day ceremony, the students gave their first go at a Mystery Skype. A great way to see the world through the use of ICTs in the classroom! Students prepared questions that would help them figure out who they were talking to and where this person was. The students found the location of our Mystery Skyper, Chrissy Gregg, by asking some very creative questions! The students then had the chance to have a virtual tour of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Rock Climbing

This unit on survival really pushed my students limits! Not only did they have to create 'Survival Vlogs' for their final assignement, we decided to head out to the local climbing gym and have them test out their skills! They even got me up there!

During a few weeks, our class enjoyed many different activities and learned tons of new interesting facts about medieval times. The students created their own castle and after a visit from Oyez! Oyez! they created their own coat of arms. They also created their medieval persona. Each castle member attended Queen Deborah's feast in Geneva during which they had tasty treats and got to know about eachother. They shared their life stories, how they got to be members of the castle and their personal quests. All of a sudden, the castle was menaced by an opposing castle. All the members got together to create catapults to defend their castle. It was a long and difficult battle but we managed to protect our castle.

Lucky for us we only lost a few men

during the battle.

This week we welcomed 'Les mots s'animent' for a workshop on reading. The students were lucky enough to hear different types of short stories that peaked their interest for reading different kinds of litterature. The workshop allowed them to see that wether it be horror, comedy, love, detective, whatever truly tickles their fancy, there is something out there for every reader! Students even had the chance to practice their voices by giving a voice to a character pictured on a paper and reading the line indicated on the back of the picture. The result was pretty great! Thanks again to the two wonderful readers who shared their passion for reading with us!

APP DATING

After being a participant in an activity such as this one during a university class, I decided it would be fun to try with my students!

Each student researched an app of their choice and had to fill out a form for homework. They then came back to class and presented their app in a 'speed dating' format. The kids loved it, and learned about all kinds of new apps that are available to them! Check out some sample videos of their activity.

Dinosaurs and Science

This week we started exploring the world of dinosaurs.  Students started their research on different breeds of dinosaurs and attended a 'paleontologist' conference where they shared their findings with other 'paleontologists' in the class. Afterwards, they created their own breed of dinosaur, had a dinosaur battle against other paleontologists and those who survived went on to be attractions in the latest dinosaur amusement park. To get them in the dinosaur theme, as well as to get their creative juices flowing, we set off to the big city of Montreal, where we toured Science 26, built various prototypes during the Fabrik workshop, dined at the very luxurious Cage aux Sports and finally took a stroll through dinosaur land.

Paleontologist Conference

Puppets

Trying out different mediums to create our art - Here students used Model Magic to build puppets for their stories. They are pretty talented! Unfortunately we have not presented the puppet shows to the grade 1 and 2 class yet, but it was a great activity!

This year's novel was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One night as I lay awake thinking about what my class could do for their end of the year presentation, I got the bright idea to do a play based on the book. During Christmas break the students were assigned chapters. During the month of Janurary the students wrote the script using a Google Doc. Afterwards, tasks were assigned to each group. Invitations, decorations, backdrops, tickets, powerpoint pictures...everything was organised by the students! The hardest part was next...learning their lines! Everyone had a role and everyone played it perfectly! The first presentation was in front of the school and it was a success. I could have never imagined that that night it would be even better in front of the parents! I'm a very proud teacher!!

Trip to Toronto

And the end of the year is here...

What an amazing year we had!

Both grade 6 Language and Comm. students headed off to Toronto for one last school trip before summer break and moving on to high school. We got to visit many attractions and do many activities. During our trip we hit the Blue Jays game when we arrived, then off to the CN Tower. Day 2, we toured the city of Toronto on a double decker bus and then rolled down the QEW to the beautiful Niagara Falls. We ended our day with dinner and a show at Medieval Times. Before heading back to Quebec on the third day, we stopped in at the Ontario Science Centre. A trip of a  lifetime! New bonds were made and the memories will last forever!

I'm sure going to miss these guys!

Have a great summer break!
